Sugar Free Milestones at Goldfish Swim School Carmel

Goldfish Swim School has provided us with the experience of lessons for our candid reviews.

October was a wild month for The Lou, aka swimmer girl. She got a diagnosis that looking back makes oh so much sense due to the noted symptoms and the medical history in our family, but in the moment it took us by surprise and kind of rock her world, really our whole family's world.

The Lou has a metabolic disorder that is causing some insulin resistance and her diet and our family eating lifestyle has had to change asap. Too many sweets in the house and too much eating out. October is a hard month for that kind of news. Halloween! Bring on the candy, oh wait, we can't do that anymore. Sigh.

Her doctor is amazing and has helped her (and us) see that balance is key and she's a kid, so having a zero tolerance policy on sweet treats isn't really realistic. Understanding her specific diet needs and being ultra good the majority of the time is what is going to take us to where we need to be with her.

With that said, for Halloween, Goldfish Swim School Carmel to the rescue! The Lou was able to share her love of swimming and pass out free family swim passes to all her friends - from the neighborhood, to school to church friends! It put a fun element in a holiday that all of the sudden was so different for her. Plus it showed her and others that there is more to life than candy and sugar. Everyone could get their swim on with a place that she adores!

With just a few weeks under our belt with the new eating lifestyle, we've had some huge successes. We are trying new recipes and snacks. Some we love and some we say that was interesting. Ha! And The Lou has noted some things too...

She sleeps better, has more energy and her skin looks amazing! We don't talk weight (we're body positive girls), but mama is noticing that The Lou's clothes are slightly more loose. Bonus! Her gym teacher noticed that her mile run time improved. And... drumroll... she got her first ever 1st place ribbon at her Goldfish Swim School Swim Force meet this past Friday. She glided through the water like never before! Her energy and speed is up!

For The Lou the world just opened up wide! She's always been a happy, spunky little fireball, but now with the recent changes, she's thriving on a whole new level and taking the world by storm. Go figure you don't even need sugar for that. Thank you to Goldfish Swim School for walking right beside my little girl and cheering her on in so many ways both in and out of the pool. You guys rock!

Want to get your swim on at a free family swim? We have a few passes left. Comment and we'll send you one.

Thank you Goldfish Swim School for sponsoring this post.

My Greatest Challenge | Faith Friday

My nephew texted earlier this week and asked if he could interview me for a homework project. Little did I know the question coming wasn't an easy one, and it would bring tears and hard memories. He said he was supposed to ask someone over 30 and not his parents about the biggest challenge in their life. I advised I'd need a bit to think on that. It didn't take long. I was able to pinpoint it easily. Infertility. Growing up I always knew I wanted to be a mom. I never knew it wouldn't come easy. Coach Man and I struggled for five years to have a child. During our struggle, I often couldn't understand why God was withholding my heart's desires and how other women, made a choice, and just threw away the gift of motherhood like no biggie. What I would have given for that child that they didn't want. Hey, girl, over here! Give it to me. I'll love the heck out of that baby! Really, I will. During those years, all I could see around me was pregnan

Word of the Year: Conquer

As a writer, I adore words. I always have, even as a little girl. They're like old friends to me. My 2019 word of the year is conquer, along with two supporting words - contemplate and celebrate. The three together may seem random and odd, but to me they all go hand in hand with the growth I have in mind for this year. 2018 was a year full of hard things. No worse than any other people's hard things, but still hard things. We moved, a new job for Coach Man, new schools for the hooligans, navigating a new high deductible insurance plan that does not cover insulin for the type 1 diabetic in the family (#insulin4all - but we'll chat that in another blog, because oh do I have some things to say), a health discovery for one of the kiddos and a major medical issue for Coach Man right before Christmas. It was definitely a year that kept us on our toes, but also a year filled with joy as we tackled the hurdles head on and with purpose. Well, we are a football family, so tack
